Travel Vaccinations
Information and advice for travelling abroad
Travel Vaccinations
Our nurses can provide travel health advice and arrange for appropriate immunisations.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel, please complete our online travel form.
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel - Vaccines need time to take effect and some may require a course over several weeks.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
What is covered under the NHS
These travel vaccinations can be given by your GP practice under the NHS:
- Hepatitis A vaccine (monovalent vaccine)
- Combined hepatitis A and typhoid vaccine
- Typhoid vaccine
- Combined tetanus, diphtheria and polio vaccine
- Cholera vaccine
You can buy the following malaria prevention medicines over the counter from a community pharmacy. You don’t need a prescription:
- Chloroquine (Avloclor®)
- Proguanil (Paludrine®)
- Chloroquine with proguanil (Avloclor/Paludrine®)
- Atovaquone with proguanil (Maloff Protect®)
